Isar 2 NPP world electricity production champion for sixth time in a row

Germany is currently the most successful nuclear power plant operator. Five of the world`s top ten production records were achieved by German nuclear power plants last year. Having generated an annual total of 12.24 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, the Isar 2 nuclear power plant became world electricity production champion for the sixth time in a row already.

The German Atomic Forum welcomes this record, seeing it as a clear demonstration of the high-class performance of the German nuclear power plants. These figure clearly show the top position that German nuclear power plants occupy internationally when it comes to safety, reliability and availability. Despite operating the comparatively small number of 18 reactors, Germany produced the fourth-highest amount of electricity in 2004, behind the USA, France and Japan. In the so-called base-load area - the supply of electricity around the clock - economical and environmentally-friendly nuclear power even contributes around 50% in Germany.

In 2004, the share of nuclear power in world-wide electricity production rose by 3.7%. 441 reactor units are currently in operation in 31 countries. At present, 22 nuclear power plant units are under construction in 9 different countries. In addition, France has decided on a site for a further nuclear power plant.
